One of Neighboring Academy’s very own, Joshua Aponte, received the Central PA MLK Drum Major Award over the holiday.

DAUPHIN COUNTY, PA —As a part of the celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy, community members gathered at Marshall Math Science Academy to award students with outstanding achievement across multiple school districts in the Central PA region.

Joshua Aponte of Steelton-Highspire High School was presented with the Central PA MLK Drum Major Award for outstanding achievement in service and leadership.

About the Student

Joshua is a Junior at Steelton-Highspire and an active member of the Neighboring Academy. He started playing basketball four years ago and currently plays for his high school team and an AAU team. Joshua also enjoys spending time drawing or hanging out with friends and family.

Coming from a family of nine, Joshua told us how the importance of service has been engrained in him from his family. “I have no limits to helping other people,” Joshua told us. “A lot of that comes from my mom.”

When asked what it takes to be a leader, he told us, “You have to lead by example and set the tone… You have to see things from everyone’s perspective.” He emphasized that, to him, genuine leadership is “a balance of discipline and respect.”

To Joshua Aponte, being a Neighbor means being Selfless, Comforting, and Bringing Hope to those around him.
